Democracy in Honduras

Much has been said about an alleged coup d’état that may have happened in Honduras. Many must even wonder, “Where is Honduras?,” or “Why should I care?”

Well, Honduras is right in the middle of the Americas, in the exact center of Central America. Why is this important? Well, for one, it provides a great location for trade. It has the best two natural harbors in the whole region, and its ports are used by all the Central American nations.

So? Well, Central America happens to be one of the steadiest growing regions in the world, barely hurt by the global recession, and its growth predictions are much better than those of larger regions. Thus, Honduras provides opportunities for many.

But, What else? Ah! Central America in general, and Honduras in particular, provides great strategic value. Most, if not all of the cocaine smuggled into the US from South America, passes through Honduras. Its proximity to the Continental United States can place America within reach of Iranian missiles, should Venezuela’s ally and archenemy of all things Western, get his way.

But most important of all, Honduras has been a strong US ally since the beginning of time. Most recently, Honduras helped stop the Soviet Union in its last thrust against the Free World in the Americas. Before that, Honduras contributed to the Allies’ war effort during World War II, and during World War I.

So, Honduras’s geographical position again plays against her and her allies. Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez would be delighted to take over the US’s air force base in central Honduras. Venezuela’s imperialistic ambitions have been halted in Honduras, and now, Mr. Chavez is fighting back.

The United States’ foreign policies seem to support Mr. Chavez’s ambitions. That is why it is very important to make it clear that Honduras has NOT struck a blow against Democracy: She has upheld her democratic values and system from an autocratic President who defied the Law and his country’s institutions, to usher in a Communist regime controlled by Mr. Chavez.

Honduras is preparing for elections which have been called for long before Mr. Zelaya’s ouster as President. Honduras is ready to prove her democratic nature and I hope to offer an interactive forum to discuss this and other issues in an open fashion, freely and without censorship of any kind.

Democracy is the beast means to Freedom and Prosperity.

Curioso, cómo Brasil se ha enredado torpemente en las grandes ligas de la diplomacia.



Amancebada con Venezuela y con Irán, ha suscrito un tratado multilateral con Turquía e Irán como contrapartes, para facilitar el acceso iraní a una bomba atómica.



Denigrando a Honduras mientras besa las botas a Irán, Brasil se ha dejado avergonzar con la negativa de Teherán a la oferta brasileña de conceder asilo a mujeres condenadas a muerte por lapidación por causa de 'adulterio' declarado por tribunales religiosos.



¿Cuál es la congruencia entre los valores brasileños y su política exterior? La política exterior del actual gobierno brasileño le desnuda como pueril aprendiz de Potencia Prematura que no ha comenzado a hacer reales contribuciones al bien de la Humanidad.

El 3 de julio de 2009, Honduras denunció la Carta Constitutiva de la Organización de Estados Americanos. Ignorando la manifestación política de voluntad de un estado soberano y miembro fundador, la Asamblea consideró que la denuncia no surtía efecto alguno, y votó para Suspender la membresía de Honduras ante el organismo hemisférico.

Hoy el consenso alcanzado para decidir aquella suspensión no es igual, pero tampoco hay todavía consenso para revertir la disposición.

Ante ello, Honduras procura, desesperadamente, alcanzar el consenso de dos tercios de la membresía para reinsertarse en el organismo.

En cambio, Venezuela necesita tan solo once votos para evitar el reintegro de nuestro país a la OEA. Es de esperarse que con relativa facilidad pueda Miraflores impedir el anhelo hondureño, a partir de los inoportunos esfuerzos de Washington para que se nos reintegre.

La OEA puede quedarse sin nosotros. Me gustaría tan solo que nuestro gobierno dejase ya de andar suplicando.

Me parece formidable y oportuna la política nuestra de concentrar nuestros esfuerzos en construir relaciones bilaterales con aquellos estados que nos han demostrado su amistad.

Esa sabia política no es congruente con los lastimeros esfuerzos que hacemos para pedir, como terneritos berreando por la teta materna, que nos acepten nuevamente donde no nos quieren.

Que Dios salve a Honduras.
